Uploading a Video

How to upload your video to Toast and what formats are supported.

Supported Formats

Toast supports all common video formats that your browser can decode:

FormatExtensionNotes
MP4.mp4Most common, recommended
WebM.webmGood for screen recordings
MOV.movCommon from iPhones and Macs
MKV.mkvSupported in most browsers
AVI.aviLegacy format, works in most cases

Maximum file size: 10 GB

How Upload Works

  1. Navigate to the Projects page
  2. Click New Project
  3. Drag and drop your video file into the upload zone, or click to browse your files
  4. Toast begins processing immediately

Privacy by Design

Your video file is stored in your browser's Origin Private File System (OPFS) — a secure, sandboxed storage area that only Toast can access. The video is never uploaded to any server.

Only the extracted audio track is sent (encrypted) to external services for transcription. Video frames stay on your device at all times.

What Happens After Upload

Toast automatically starts its processing pipeline:

  1. Audio extraction — Separates audio from video using FFmpeg (runs in your browser)
  2. Audio quality check — Measures signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)
  3. Noise removal — If audio is noisy (SNR below 25 dB), automatic noise removal is applied
  4. Transcription — Word-level timestamps in your video's language
  5. Face tracking — Detects face position for smart reframing
  6. AI analysis — Analyzes content and generates the edit manifest

Once complete, you're automatically taken to the editor.

Tips

  • Use good audio: Higher quality audio leads to better transcription accuracy
  • Single speaker works best: Toast is optimized for talking-head content with one primary speaker
  • Browser matters: Chrome and Edge have the best WebCodecs support for processing and export
